CHAPTER SEVEN

“TONIGHT’S PERFECT. I’LL see you both then.”

Faisal pulled his Bluetooth from his ear and dropped it on top of the blueprint of an oil rig overtaking his office desk. Rukiya had been sitting across from him; her eyes, glued to her tablet, sprang up to him as soon as he ended his phone call. She looked as he’d felt before he had taken the call: nervous.

Thankfully he had good news for her.

“They’re willing to discuss our original terms for the partnership over dinner.”

All wasn’t lost after all. The Turkish brothers he’d hoped to partner with were reconsidering their hasty decision not to sign their deal. Faisal’s grin edged on manic as he realized what that meant; his board wouldn’t have anything to hold over his head, and his company’s hard work and effort wouldn’t go to waste. Moreover, the people of Somalia stood a chance at being uplifted by this project. Assuming his dinner went smoothly, and everyone walked away happy.

“Shall I look into restaurants?”

“No, they’ve already made their reservations.” Which was more than fine by him. He had enough on his plate to think about. Zara...

Maryan and our kiss.

He’d thought of Zara’s nanny plenty since yesterday. Now, nearly twenty-four hours later, Faisal still didn’t feel any better about how their explosive brush of intimacy ended. She had run away from him.

It’s not a good sign, he thought glumly.

And for once he didn’t know what to do around a woman.

It wasn’t like he had to fight for the attention and affection. Women liked him. He liked them, too, well enough to hook up when he needed an itch scratched. He hadn’t had any of them push him away after a kiss.

Or flee from him.

Once again, for what had to be the millionth time, he tripped over that fact and fell flat on his face. All the thinking he’d done left him with no answer to solve the riddle that Maryan had become to him overnight. She was a beautiful enigma. One he wanted to kiss again over and over until they were both breathless.

What wasn’t a mystery was their chemistry.

He’d been right about his instinct. They were mutually attracted to each other. It was enough for him to hope by the time they spoke again yesterday’s worst parts would have been forgotten. And they’d be speaking sooner as his evening plans were now changed. But first he’d clear his office and end another long day of work.

“Feel free to leave for home, Rukiya. Thank you for staying longer again.”

His executive assistant nodded her acknowledgment. “If that’s all then,” she said, standing. “Have a good night, Mr. Umar, and enjoy your dinner.”

Before Rukiya reached the exit of his office, a knock at his door had Faisal calling out, “Come in.”

Burak opened the door and remained on the threshold as he explained his presence.

“One of the secretaries has a message for you.”

Rukiya managed his messages at her desk primarily. She’d been with him most of the day, researching alternative partners for their foray into the oil and gas industry.
